Labourlist blogger advocates swabbing babies and immigrants to build a DNA database holding samples from everyone

Dna inspection Over at Labourlist, a Labour Council candidate named Matthew Zarb-Cousin says

As a member of the Labour Party, I would like to argue why I believe a DNA database, where swabs of DNA are taken at birth – and of people coming into the country – is not only fair but also vital.

And why?  Well, because, he says,

everyone is a potential criminal. 

I suppose that it has at least the virtue of honesty.  The same position is put with a little more subtlety over at the Guardian's CommentIsFree.

    They’re nothing short of extremists. seems they want Napoleonic law here. This is of course par for the course, Nu-labour was always a party that attracted Communists and wicked god less anti-Monarchists. Anyone who alas has made even a little study of the Black Arts, will recognise the wickedness of such a bank of DNA represents. It is true that orthodox Jews would bury or burn their nail clippings, for the very real fear somebody might be able to use these body parts against them through magical abuses. Maybe we have moved on from superstition
    But strangely Quantum entanglements, also suggest that such connections are very real indeed. The “if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear” attack or the red bullies, has been effective in keeping opposition silent for the most part, as they have undermined this data-base by placing innocent people in it.
    Of course we have something to fear DNA can be cloned, the public have been conditioned to believe its 100% infallible. So anyone might be framed for any crime by a future KGB style Socialist or fascist abomination. Frankly including innocent people in this data base makes a mockery of the principle until proven guilty, as everyone included in the data base is considered to be a suspect, in ever crime that this Data base is used to screen for a match.

    Let Zarb be the first to be swabbed and the first to be the recipient of the injustices which are sure to result from this totalitarian measure.

    This sure is a real problem as most people will take it against them.

    I’ll be swabbed first, no problem.
    I’m not discounting the possibility that this may lead to more sophisticated criminal activity, and I would prioritise addressing the root causes of crime before the justice aspect.
