Return My DNA

Return my dna The Tories are running a "Return my DNA" campaign.  As we have often argued here and elsewhere, they want the DNA of innocent people off the database.

I used to work for the Tories and some people will say that I'm just shilling for the Party. Oh well. I think that this is of interest to readers of our site and I want to share and endorse it (as I endorsed Diane Abbott when she was acting on the same issue). You can sign up to the petition – without joining the Tory party or anything like that – here.

If they form government after the next election, Big Brother Watch intends to hold them to this commitment and to see the profiles of innocent people start coming off the database very, very quickly – triggered by a statutory instrument, probably, or – if need by – by legislation.

You can’t seem to register an interest in anything these last few years without being required to submit your personal and private information to some database somewhere.
I declined to sign the petition – although it is something I support I do not wish to have my personal information on yet another database. I do not want yet another profile on yet another system with broad access.
Before signing the petition it’s worth reading what happens to your name and address . . . . (below)
    . . . . . . . . . . . .
**If you register with the site we will build a “profile” from the information that we collect about you. This consists of your name (not your address), your photograph, your introductory words and information as to the campaigns you support. This information will be accessible to all the other registered users of the site.
We will use your profile information and the other information that we collect about you to customise and improve the site and the Party’s campaigning activities, to allow you and the other registered users to communicate through the site and to send you information about the campaigns that you support. This information will be sent through the site and you can also opt to receive notifications by email.
We may disclose your information to service providers which help us with the administration of the site and our campaigns. You should also be aware that your profile information will be widely available to registered users of the site, who may be located anywhere in the world, including in countries which do not have data protection laws as stringent as those in the UK. You should bear this in mind in deciding whether to provide, and selecting, a photograph and introductory words.**

    There is a non-partisan, non-data-collecting site here: http://reclaimyourdna.org/
It is disappointing that the Tories are diluting the impact of a broadly based campaign for a bit of short term party branding. They would be better off giving full support to the original site (from NO2ID and Genewatch), which would make them look principled as much as this makes them look opportunist.
