Nick Pickles is a Law graduate of the University of Durham.He joined Big Brother Watch as Director in September 2011, with a background in corporate public relations and technology. Before joining Big Brother Watch he worked with small SMEs and multinational companies in corporate communications.
A candidate in the 2010 General Election, Nick stood against Yvette Cooper, achieving a 12.5% swing to the Conservatives. He has remained a commentator on a wide variety of issues including digital privacy and web-blocking, freedom of speech, civil liberties and terrorism legislation.
Since joining Big Brother Watch he has become one of the UK’s leading voices on privacy and civil liberties, giving oral evidence to the Joint Committee on the Draft Communications Data Bill and the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties (LIBE) Committee.
Nick is also a renowned music photographer, with his work appearing across the world, in publications including Rolling Stone and the NME. His recent projects have included working with Coldplay, Madness and Fatboy Slim.
(And no, he isn’t related to Eric Pickles MP. ‘Pickles’ is a common Yorkshire surname that apparently has something to do with growing up near a small field or paddock.)
